It is through reflecting about the actions at work and the concrete experiences that will lead you to recognizing that the experience has forged a new way of thinking about the classroom theory.

An abstract concept worked through in a real situation, as an immediate need, will change the participants. Below is a diagram of how one contemporary experiential learning theorist, David Kolb, explains how interns learn from experience.

Kolb's experiential learning style theory is typically represented by a four stage learning cycle in which the learner 'touches all the bases': Your reflection process is best led by a workplace guide such as a supervisor, mentor, or a faculty member after the experience. This post-experience reflection with a guide gives you another voice that can ask questions and draw comparisons to abstract ideas that are now more completely understood. Lessons learned can become internalized and put to use in future work opportunities.

As an intern, at the beginning of your career experiences and career path, you will almost always learn something that will inform you at any future work setting. A guide to your reflection activities will point out both the positives of what you learned as well as the learning that you can take from the absence of an obvious achievement.

Both sides can be extremely powerful and transformational as you approach next steps in career development. Below are just a few reflection questions to stimulate your thinking and learning about the internship work experience. Communication is one of the most important professional skills you can develop. The process of seeking an internship, the work experience itself, and reflecting afterward, will all contribute to the growth of your communication skills.

As you reflect on your internship, practice speakiing succinctly and precisely about your experience. Most listeners will pay attention to shorter answers. You should be able to describe an internship experience in two minutes. Use action-oriented and positive words. My involvement in the department has increased steadily since I began my internship.

When I first began this internship, I was assigned fairly basic and uninteresting work, such as helping with paper work. However, as I have gained proficiency at working with the department, I have begun to be assigned more complex and important work, such as filling out crime scene reports that are sent to the main office.

I hope that I will continue to have opportunities to transition into doing more interesting and advanced work. During my time working as an intern, there have been various things that I have learned that have surprised me. For example, I was surprised at the number of calls that the crime scene investigation department receives, as it is a much lower number than I expected.

The department has stated that it received 27 calls in May, 26 in June, and predicts that it will receive even fewer this month. While I have been informed by members of the staff that some other cities may receive more calls and complete larger amounts of work, that the police department in Al Rahba city is not of that size and that generally crime scene investigation is a smaller department for the city.

In addition, I was surprised that shifts were only five hours long. Even though the department receives a fairly small number of calls, the police department is overall of a decent size, covering over 50 square kilometers of area. The crime scene investigation office is a small building that is separate from the main building. Much other work is handled by the rest of the police department. Many interesting events have occurred during my time working as an intern for the department of crime scene investigation at the Al Rahba city police station.

There have been eight calls to the department since I began working as an intern. The incidents were similar, but differed slightly between cases. After speaking with members of the department, I found that calls in this category are highly common.

Regardless, seeing the process of how these cases were handled was useful experience. Being able to see the same type of case multiple times was particularly helpful. The remaining four calls were all for different reasons. One call was for a death related to the usage of drugs. Another was for suicide.

A third incident was for a farm fire. The final incident was an incident in which a house caught fire, resulting in the death of two married adults. It is interesting to consider that much of the work conducted by the crime scene investigation department is not the result of a human committing a crime against another person; rather, many of the scenes investigated were from uncontrollable circumstances.

The crime scene investigation department has the capacity to investigate matters that are not only criminal in nature, and does so on various occasions. This experience is interesting because it is somewhat different from the type of calls that I expected that the department would receive. Having this experience is valuable.

Because three of the eight calls that have been received so far involve the death of people, it is interesting to consider the implications of this. Before coming to this job, I would have expected to be less comfortable working on cases involving death. However, to some extent, working with death becomes routine. I have discussed the topic with others working in the department. Most express that they have felt some level of discomfort at times, but that after working with the department, death becomes fairly routine.

One interesting topic discussed in this course that can be applied to my time working with the department of crime scene investigation is that of the importance of confidentiality and privacy. During my time working with the department, I have had to learn much about confidentiality limits from all of these sources. Since the legal system in the United Arab Emirates differs in some ways from that of the United States, it was important to make sure that I understood the exact scope of law in the UAE.

I was helped in learning about this information from both colleagues and my supervisor. In particular, my supervisor prepares presentations for interns on various topics.

This topic was covered in one such presentation. Ensuring that I am following all of these requirements can be complicated in some ways, but the importance of confidentiality is such that it is still important to do so.

Another instance that has come up during my internship is that of how to ensure that interpersonal relationships are maintained effectively and in such a way that ethics are maintained. Various ethical issues can arise if such relationships occur. For example, when interacting with those who come into the department, determining boundaries is important.

Overall, the experience of working with the department of crime scene investigation with this police department has been valuable and useful in various ways. First, this internship has been useful in providing job experience, which I hope will be useful in preparing for work in related fields in the future.

Second, this internship has been useful as a tool in understanding concepts that have been explored in courses previously. Concepts that I learned in some of the first classes that I took at Portland State University have come up during this internship. Finally, this internship has been valuable in creating a network of connections that may be useful in understanding this field.

As I continue into the following weeks, I hope that similar valuable experiences continue to occur. Based on previous trends, I predict that I will be able to become increasingly more involved in the work done by the department as I continue to work here.

I hope that this will allow me to gain more direct experience. Everyday, my supervisor has small presentations prepared on various relevant topics.
